Description

I have a lot of different projects going on right now. I wanted to show you what my workspace looks like in the midst of trying to figure out a composition. Once I figure out what poses I like I will transfer them onto another piece of paper where I can refine details and the overall piece. Lots of patience!

I am planning on making two separate paintings out of this piece, but when you place them side by side they flow into each other. The piece was inspired by the lifeforce found in nature. Predator prey relationships, night and day, etc. I have had this composition dancing in my head for a long time now. I want this piece to be powerful and full of life/energy.

The elk and wolf are both powerful animals and depend on each other for survival. Even though the wolf being an apex predator relies on the prey animals such as elk for food, the stag also relies on the wolves, as the wolves hunt down sick animals and remove them from the herd. There is an often unnoticed relationship that exists between every living creature in the woods.

Whether it be plant or animal, predator or prey, every thing is connected.

Ooh, this looks like it's going to be a great painting. How do you normally sketch? Do you make a little thumbnail sketch first or do you sketch big and transfer with tracing paper or just start sketching on the watercolor paper?

I used to use tracing paper but after so much redrawing the linework kept seeming stiff and stale, so now I like to sketch straight onto the nice paper to streamline the process. Of course, this has lots of disadvantages, so I'm curious to hear from another watercolor artist.
